Dalia or broken wheat or fada is made by milling the whole raw wheat grains coarsely. It is highly nutritious as it does not undergo refining. When dalia is cooked, it has a hearty, warm aroma and is delightful.
It is easy to digest and is full of nutrition. It is high in fiber and is believed to be one of the best foods for weight loss. It can be made in several ways and is one of the healthiest options for breakfast/lunch and dinner.
Dalia is a natural source of B-vitamins, minerals, fiber and protein and is much healthier than packaged foods as it has no preservatives. There are 3 types of dalia fine size dalia, medium size dalia, and large size dalia. Today I am using medium size dalia which is best for khichdi, upma and pulav.
So let’s start preparing the delicious Dalia khichdi
Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 25 mins
Total Time: 40 mins
Category: Main Course
Serves: 2
Ingredients:
½ cup Dalia (broken wheat)
½ cup soybean chunks (soak for 15 mins)
2 tbsp chana dal (soak for 10 mins)
2 tbsp frozen corn
1 onion finely chopped
1-2 carrot finely chopped
½ capsicum
5 pieces round beans
2 green chilies
50 grams paneer
Handful coriander leaves
¼ turmeric powder
¼ coriander powder
¼ tsp red chili powder (optional)
½ tsp garam masala/kitchen king masala
Salt to taste
Instruction:
- Dry roast the dalia on a pan or pressure cooker. Roast until the color changes to golden brown and turns aromatic.
- Heat 1 tbsp of ghee or oil in a pressure cooker on medium heat. Once the ghee or oil is hot, add the cumin seeds and let it sizzle for a few seconds.
- Now add the onion and stir fry until the colour changes to golden brown and onion turns translucent.
- Then add the soaked chana dal and saute well, add the chopped carrot, chopped beans and capsicum and stir well for a minute.
- Add the frozen corn and soaked soybean and mix well. Now add the green chilies and close the lid.
- Cook for 2 minutes on medium heat.
- Now add the ¼ tsp turmeric powder, ¼ tsp coriander powder, ½ tsp garam masala and salt to taste. Add red chili if you like spicy food.
- Mix well and add the roasted dalia and again mix well. Then add the cubed paneer and stir softly so the paneer does not break.
- Add 3 cups of water for ½ cup of dalia.
- Now pressure cook for 2 whistles on high flame. (Sometimes it takes more than 2 whistles to cook the dalia depending on the type of daila used, I used medium size dalia).
- Now take out the dalia khichdi in a serving bowl and add lemon which is must and garnish with coriander leaves.
- The dalia khichdi is ready, it tastes great when served hot.
Happy Cooking!!!
