Vermicelli is a traditional type of pasta round in a section similar to spaghetti. In English-speaking regions, it is usually thinner than spaghetti, while in Italy it is typically thicker.
Vermicelli Upma is a popular South Indian breakfast dish which is also known as Semiya Upma or Namkeen Semiya. It is a quick and healthy snack that you can cook easily in just 25 minutes with simple ingredients. A delicious and quick snacking option for all your hunger.
Tip: There are 2 types of vermicelli ie roasted and unroasted. I am using unroasted, so first we need to roast the vermicelli. Otherwise, it will turn mushy & sticky.
So let’s start preparing the delicious Vermicelli Upma

Ingredients:
1&¼ cup vermicelli
2 medium-size onion
½ capsicum
5-6 pieces round beans
½ carrot
2 tbsp frozen corn
2 green chillis
Coriander leaves for garnish
5 curry leaves
¼ tsp mustard seeds
¼ tsp turmeric powder
1 packet Maggi masala
Salt to taste
Instruction:
- Heat the pan and add 1 tbsp oil and roast the vermicelli. Roast until the color changes to golden brown and turns aromatic.
- Keep the roasted vermicelli aside and dry roast ½ cup of peanuts on the same pan.
- Now take 2 tbsp of oil and ¼ tsp mustard seeds and let it sizzle for a few seconds, now add the curry leaves and green chili and saute well.
- Now add the 2 medium size chopped onion and saute well, when the onions turns translucent.
- The add ½ chopped capsicum and chopped beans along with chopped carrot and 2 tbsp frozen corn and mix well.
- Add salt as per taste and 1 packet of Maggi masala and stir well. Then add 2 tbsp of water to the vegetables and close the lid for 2 mins so that the vegetables are cooked well.
- Now add the roasted vermicelli (semiya) and mix gently.
- Then add 1 cup of water, mix and close the lid. Make sure that the flame is on medium flame and simmer it for 3 mins.
- After 3 mins you will see that the vermicelli (semiya) is cooked very well and a little slimy. Hence, rest it for 5 mins by closing the lid.
- Now serve hot by garnishing with coriander leaves.
